"Biggest Loser" Makes SBCH a Winner!

Back in September 2009 during a wedding in one of our supporting churches a lady that attended "Liz Young" was on the last season of "Biggest Loser."

On the show Liz had to run a marathon and if she completed (she didn't have to win - just complete) she was given $10,000 to donate to her favorite charity.  She did complete the week 12 marathon in 6:55:22.  She chose Subic Bay Children's Home because of the display she saw on the church's missionary board!

We home just received the $10,000 this week!!  We have known about it since December but didn't announce it until it was in the bank.

A HUGE Christmas for the kids this year.  The Christmas gifts included Gameboys, guitars, doll houses, balls, dolls, baking sets, Easy Bake ovens, and a whole lot of other stuff.  Along with the gifts the kids and staff had a nice Christmas dinner donated by one of our supporters.

A dear friend of the children's home gave $1,000 for Christmas bonuses for the workers this year. They received around 2,000 pesos ($45) each.  That's almost two weeks pay for them. They were very excited.

A porch was just added to the new boys dorm putting the final touches on the project.  The boys are very excited about their new home.  The girls are a little jealous.

The playground equipment has all been set up and the kids are enjoying it.  The trampoline broke but Mr. Dave has repaired it and it's good as new.

The kids went to the towns and villages to pass a portion of 50,000 gospel tracts someone donated to the children's home.

The response was very good.  Brother Rodrigo said they received several texts encouraging them to keep doing what they are doing and some promised to be in church this coming Sunday.

Giving out tracts in the Philippines is a blessing.  I've never had anyone turn one down unlike here in the states.

258 Chickens are in the Freezer.  Another 250 chickens are left alive.  They will be put in the freezer this week.  The kids help in the slaughtering process and all of them tell me they really enjoy it.  I ask, "Are you kidding"?  They tell me, "No sir, it's fun."

Brother Teddy made a make shift slaughter house modeled after one on the internet.  The chickens are placed upside down in what looks like a funnel and then their throats are cut.  Because they are upside down with their head sticking out of the bottom of the contraption they don't struggle or resist.

After they are dead the are dipped in hot water heated to a certain temperature then put in a defeathering machine which defeathers them in seconds.

They are then cut up and put on trays then go to the freezer.  Was that too much information?

The Children's Home reported no one hurt and no damage to the property from Typhoon Parma.  Thanks be to God!

Jingjing celebrated her eighteenth birthday last Firday.  She really enjoyed the big party (debut).  The theme color was lavender.  They had lechon (whole toasted pig), spaghetti, and a big, beautiful birthday cake.  For an instructional video on making your own lechon go to:

A cake like this would be $200 - $300 here in the U.S.  In the Philippines it is only $30 - $35.

This week 250 chickens went to the freezer.  We still have 250 alive and well but only for a short time.  They will have good quality freshly frozen chicken for weeks to come.

Last Friday the kids went to the beach to splash around and play with sea creatures.  They also enjoyed big meal of Pork BBQ, Hot Dog Sandwiches, Rice Noodles, and of course - rice.

Ps.118:24 - This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

                                               New Chicks Arrived

They will be ready to harvest in about 30 days.  We are having a problem with huge jungle rats coming out at night and stealing the chicks.

Seven large balikbayan boxes just arrived at the children's home filled with left over Easter and Valentine candy, clothes, and shoes.  The children went shopping out of the boxes.  It looks like they are having a great time.  The clothes donations came from several of our supporters located in southern Mississippi. The donations were very nice, new or slightly used items.  Many were name brand like Old Navy.  Filipinos love Old Navy stuff.

The Retaining Wall Project mandated by the government is almost completed.  A generous donor gave the full amount ($1,800) for the project.  Progress was slowed by the heavy rain fall.  Mud from all the rain buried the bottom of the backhoe.  Even though this wall had to be built to keep the dirt from washing a way the nice stone wall also adds beauty.  God must love fatherless children because He blesses them so much.

Someone donated a large amount of "After Christmas Candy" that they were able to purchase for pennies on the dollar.  Two balikbayan boxes full arrived the other day.  Most of the kids have never seen such fancy candy.  They are all very excited.  Some of the candy is also being given away at Vacation Bible School.

UPDATE:  The new generator is installed and in working order.  No more doing without fans at night and food spoiling

We haven't lost one of the 500 chicks.  Young chicks are prone to illness because of bacteria.  Only a couple of people tend to the chicks so bacteria won't be spread.  These guys only have about 10 days left.  Poor guys.

The main electrical transfomer blew today.  The power company said it was due to overload.  The cost to replace it will be $2,000.  Three freezers full of beef and chicken are beginning to thaw.  The power company made a temporary connection with low voltage that will not supply enough power to run everything.  The funds for the emergency generator are there but it has not been installed yet.

Five hundred chicks were delivered today for the new chicken house.  They will be ready to harvest in 37 days.

NEWS FLASH!

Someone sent in a single donation of $6,486 for the purchase of an emergency generator.  A generator is a much needed item for two reasons.  The children's home likes to buy food in bulk because it is cheaper, but they are afraid to because of the many blackouts, some lasting for several days.  The food in the freezers would spoil.  Also, during the summer when the heat index is 150 degrees the children will be able to keep their fans running.  Fans are used to stay cool and keep the mosquitoes off.  They have mosquito nets but they block air flow; sleeping under them makes it much hotter.  There were many praises to God when the check came in for the generator.

The Chicken House project is almost done.  Two seperate buildings are being built.  One for the chickens for meat and one for the egg layers.  Most of the kid's favorite meat is chicken.  Four hundred chicks have been ordered and are due to arrive in early January.  The building has a capacity for about 3000 chickens.  The kids are going to enjoy this!
